It was a beautiful, sunshiny day. The temperature was in the high seventies, with a steady sea breeze to keep things cool. For the third of July, it was a miracle that the weather was so perfect instead of blazing hot.

Rebecca sat in her new chair at work hunched over her desk, writing a report under the fluorescent lights. The clock on the wall ticked loudly. Normally, she wouldn’t notice, but everyone was out taking care of other business. The empty building amplified the sound of the seconds slipping by.

A reminder that time was running out. That a killer was out there while his victims’ remains had been scooped into bags. Friends and families were grieving. There couldn’t even be a more traditional funeral with an open casket because—she shivered—that would be a horror show.

And that was why she was working in the office when she could have taken the day off, intent on transcribing her notes from the conversation with Wanda Chase. Now that she was, the fine details prickled at her.

Lewis had moved far away. He said he wanted no contact but then initially agreed to the fishing trip. Why? To make amends after distancing himself? Or to set his father up? Or something else?

Lewis agreed to the excursion, then canceled his part of the reservation himself. That meant he knew when and where his father had planned to go. Rebecca’s intuition screamed it was too coincidental. Too neat and pat.

And where was Lewis?

A quick search hadn’t turned up a new address for the young man. Unless the oldest Chase son was choosing to live off the grid in the Centennial State, her gut told her Lewis might not have moved at all. If he was choosing to live out of the reach of his father, Rebecca should still be able to find him with the resources she had at her disposal. Yet there was nothing.

So far, she didn’t have enough evidence to obtain a warrant for his banking and credit card details. That information might just help them locate the wayward son.

That smudged line in the ledger kept sticking in her mind too. Was it just an error? Was it their reservation? Perhaps forensics would’ve figured it out by now. After she got this finished, she’d check to see if the report on that from the VSP had been added to the file yet.

Her direct phone line rang, and she picked it up. “Sheriff West, how can I help you?”

“Hey, Boss.”

Please don’t be another dead body. Please, please, please.

“What’s up, Frost?” She forced a lightness into her tone that came off sarcastic. “Need help with traffic patrol?”

“You shouldn’t sass someone who comes bearing gifts.”

Rebecca blew out a relieved breath. “I hear cars and voices. Are you calling me from the middle of an intersection? Shouldn’t you be focused on making sure our visitors this weekend don’t clog the streets?” She ran a hand through her hair and tightened the thick ponytail at the base of her neck.

“Are you accusing me of being a slacker? I’m wounded.
